Planning a rock concert isn’t too different from organizing a toy drive.

Elton John, Tina Turner, Frank Sinatra…I’ve worked for the biggest names in the music and entertainment industry. And as exciting as that work was, nothing I ever experienced backstage has come close to the excitement in a child’s eyes when I hand them a Christmas present at our Angeles del Barrio holiday event.

My name is Cathy, and I’m the Director of Events at Chicanos Por La Causa. I’ve been here for 8 years and have a career of over 32 in planning concerts and events. I’m the one who makes sure every last detail – from what the venue is to where you will throw away your trash – is taken care of.

Just like planning a rock concert, planning a toy drive requires recognizing what brings us together. Human connection, the desire to protect the magic of childhood, and love and compassion for others. This is what gifting toys to the kids in our neighborhood really means.

More than any exciting concerts or big events, I always look forward to creating a memorable holiday season for children whose parents might not be able to provide the Christmas they wish they could.

For me, all the work we do throughout the year is worth it when I see we are able to keep a young girl’s belief in the Christmas magic alive.
